Character Role Analysis
Frank Fitts
This one's kind of a toss up because, really, it's Lester and Carolyn who are at odds for most of the movie, so it almost makes sense to make her the villain. However, since Frank ends up killing Lester, we think he has to take the antagonist crown.
And beyond that very obvious game-winning point, we should note that Frank Fitts's lifelong repression of his sexual leanings is pretty much the opposite of what Lester is doing with his whole "Extreme Makeover" thing; Frank is all about tamping down his desires, and Lester is totally done with that—he's been doing it for years, and it did not work for him. His new lease on life depends on giving passion a big old bear hug.
So, while they kinda/sorta share that history of sexual repression, Lester's new loud-and-proud carpe diem attitude is very much at odds with the rigidity and shame Frank can't seem to shake, even when he does open up a bit by coming on to Lester.
