Character Role Analysis

Frank McCourt and Malachy McCourt Sr.

Even though Frank looks and sounds like his dad, he's nothing like him. He sees the devastation that his father's alcoholism causes and makes sure not to walk in his steps. However, it's also clear that his gift for storytelling is a skill that Frank inherits from his father. Unlike his father, Frank's able to take advantage of his creative gifts. Malachy's drinking prevents him from doing much with his considerable talents.
