How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from Beauty and the Beast.
Quote #4
BEAST: I want to do something for her...but what?
COGSWORTH: Well, there's the usual things: flowers...chocolates...promises you don't intend to keep...
And that's why romance is an adventure. You're taking a risk on someone else, who might not return your affections…or worse, jerk you around for a while before dropping you like a hot rock. Cogsworth's comments are intended both as a dig at those silly romantic gestures and a warning to the Beast not to go down the same path.
Quote #5
BEAST: She glanced this way, I thought I saw
And when we touched, she didn't shudder at my paw.
No, it can't be; I'll just ignore
But then, she's never looked at me that way before...
The story always emphasizes that the growing romance between the two of them is a little bit scary. We don't normally think of falling in love as an adventure in the Campbellian sense of the term, but in fact, it's probably the biggest kind of adventure there is.
Quote #6
MRS. POTTS: Barely even friends
Then, somebody bends
Unexpectedly
Just a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the Beast
The song lyrics again suggest that love is a little scary and that falling in love is an adventure in and of itself. Belle wants adventure, but she never looks at it in those terms, until she finds herself falling for the big guy. A scary prospect, to say the least.
