Atie/Martine

Although Atie tells Sophie that she loves Martine whole-heartedly at the beginning of the work, it becomes clear that her feelings about her sister are a little more complicated than that. There's a certain amount of resentment on Atie's part, partly because Martine took Sophie away from her and partly because Martine has left Atie alone with their mother.

Opportunities aside, both women are in the same boat: neither has had the nice life they were promised if they were "good girls."
