Hollis Mulwray

Interestingly, Jake never actually talks to Hollis Mulwray. He follows him around and tries to catch him committing adultery.

But, by simply following Hollis, he learns about the mystery Hollis is trying to solve: someone is attempting to steal L.A.'s water supply, in the middle of a drought. So, Hollis doesn't function as a traditional mentor to Jake, but he helps him enter the central mystery of the movie anyway.
