Character Role Analysis

Ida Sessions, Angry Farmers, The Mortician, The Little Kid on a Horse, Emma Dill

These characters all exist to dish out clues. Ida kicks off the action of the movie by impersonating Evelyn, but later functions as a pure information tool, giving Jake a key hint about how Noah is buying land under the names of dead people and people in a retirement home. (She winds up dead because of this).

The angry farmers tell Jake that the water company hasn't really been giving them any water (and has been sabotaging the water they do have), while the mortician tells Jake that Hollis had saltwater in his lungs (even though he drowned in a freshwater reservoir) and that a drunk drowned in the apparently dry L.A. river. The kid on the horse further helps unravel this mystery, telling Jake that someone's been releasing water through the riverbed at different times.

Finally, Emma Dill, a retirement home resident, tells Jake that The Albacore Club—which Noah Cross belongs to—has been donating money to the home, filling in the blanks as to who is actually stealing the water.
