Character Role Analysis

Jedediah Leland

During Charles Kane's upbringing, Mr. Thatcher is his mentor. But it's pretty clear that Kane hasn't listened to a whole lot of the stuff Thatcher has tried to teach him. Jedediah Leland, on the other hand, becomes Kane's closest friend in his young adulthood. The two start life working at The Inquirer feeling super enthusiastic about making a real difference in the world. Jed even tries to keep Charles' ego under control for the good of the paper.

But eventually, Kane's ego grows too large and Charles fires Leland for questioning him too much. It's a pretty classic friend betrayal as far as tragedies go.
