City of Ashes Part 1, Chapter 4 Summary

How It All Goes Down

The Cuckoo in the Nest

  • Simon and Clary dig through Luke's fridge for food. Everything is expired, so Luke orders a pizza.
  • They chow on pizza and talk about Clary's mom, Jace, the Clave, and Maia.
  • Clary wonders if she should get some Marks to show that she's a Shadowhunter.
  • Luke discourages it, because she hasn't had necessary training, but he does think she needs a stele.
  • He gives her his mother's stele, a "gleaming wandlike instrument" (1.4.62). Wandlike? If it looks like a wand, and does spells like a wand, it's a duck. We mean wand.
  • Over at the Institute, Alec tells Jace to head to the library again.
  • Jace goes to the library, where the Inquisitor is waiting for him.
  • Jace, of course, argues with her, unable to conceal his distaste for authority.
  • She insists on calling him Jonathan Morganstern, which he hates, because it's a much less cooler name than Jace Wayland.
  • The Inquisitor says she will be sending Jace to the prisons of the Silent City.
  • That's one scary place. For once, Jace doesn't protest.
  • Back at Luke's house, the doorbell rings.
  • It's Maia, and Clary is instantly jealous of her.
  • When Maia asks if she and Simon are brother and sister, Simon says that Clary is his girlfriend.
  • Maia says she'll keep an eye out for anything weird, and she leaves.
  • Because it's late, Clary says that Simon can spend the night with her… in her bedroom. Ooh la la.
