Character Analysis
An army officer, Prévan has a reputation for seduction much as Valmont does. The Vicomte doesn't like him at all. Unfortunately, what we hear about Prévan comes mostly from the Vicomte, whose account of the man may or may not be entirely accurate. Apparently the regiment officer turned three couples, the six of whom were the best of friends, into enemies by seducing the women and then convincing the men to take their revenge on their lovers. The Marquise de Merteuil takes him down a few notches. She sets him up, making their romantic evening together look like an attempt sexual assault on his part. He's thrown in prison and kicked out of his regiment. Only after the Marquise's letters become public is Prévan exonerated.
