• Kendra's not thrilled about spending a couple weeks with her grandparents while her parents are on a cruise; her little brother Seth will probably annoy her the whole time.
• Soon Kendra notices mysterious stuff going on around the house: butterflies swarming around mirrors and milk when it's put out, her grandma's weirdly absent, and there's a hidden message to drink the milk.
• Kendra convinces Seth to drink the milk, and then she does too—suddenly they can see fairies. Grandpa comes clean: this place is a refuge for magical creatures.
• Kendra spends time getting to know Lena, the housekeeper, who used to be a naiad. As a general rule, Kendra follows the rules (unlike her brother).
• On Midsummer Eve, Kendra is once again all about following the rules, but Seth opens a window and lets evil forces in. The kids stay safe, but the next morning, they find the rest of the house wrecked, with Grandpa and Lena missing.
• Kendra and Seth go out to look for them (unsuccessfully), and more exploring reveals that there's a giant cow that needs to be milked, so Kendra comes up with a way to do it.
• Surprise: their pet chicken is Grandma under a spell. Kendra and Seth get Muriel to transform her back, but it comes at the price of the witch's freedom.
• Next task: bargaining with a troll for info about Grandpa; Kendra sneakily helps Grandma sell the troll on a massage as a fair trade.
• They go up against Muriel, but Kendra is the only one who escapes, since she hasn't used magic or broken any rules, and thus can't be affected by magic.
• Scared and alone, Kendra desperately decides to ask the Fairy Queen for help, even though it may have disastrous consequences if she fails—Kendra requests help from the bottom of her heart though, and it works.
• Using instructions from the Fairy Queen, Kendra assembles a fairy army, and they go off to imprison Bahumat and Muriel, and release Kendra's family members. Yay.
• The experience leaves Kendra changed: she no longer needs Viola's milk to see magic creatures.
• Mom and Dad return to pick up Kendra and Seth, but Kendra knows she'll be coming back to Fablehaven sooner or later.
