Protagonist
Character Role Analysis
Redcrosse
This guy is pretty much a classic protagonist, the champion not only of Book 1 and Una, but of all of Britain since we find out over the course of the book that he's going to known as St. George, the patron saint of Britain.
But in case there was any doubt about Redcrosse's hero cred, his status as knight and his final act of dragon-slaying pretty much clinches the deal. Redcrosse's association with holiness and true religious faith also mean that his character enacts the ultimate success of those values, and suggests a connection between heroism and religious belief. Redcrosse is our hero not only because he defeats the bad guy, but because he fights on behalf of morality and Christianity.
