The real good guys in The Fallen Star are crystal clear if you keep an eye on characters' actions. Stephan is supposedly this super good guy and the leader of the Keepers, but when it comes to how he acts, he is a straight-up villain, the kind of guy who banishes Gemma's mother to the Underworld and then stabs Gemma in the leg to "teach her a lesson" before wiping her mind and removing her soul. Yikes.

On the other hand, Laylen is a vampire, which sounds pretty freaky, but based on his actions, we're confident that he's one of the good guys. He may not like Alex very much, but he'll still put his life on the line so that Alex and Gemma can run away from the Death Walkers.

Physical Appearances

Characters' physical appearances all serve as clues to their inner selves in The Fallen Star. For example, Gemma's violet eyes betray that she's different and special—which turns out to be true when she learns that she has a fallen star inside of her. Nicholas seems inhuman somehow, and it's later revealed that he's part faerie, which accounts for why he looks different. As for Stephan, this bad dude has an ugly scar on his face. Even when everyone else thinks that he's a good guy, the scar sets him apart and makes him ugly—betraying his inner ugliness and malice. Boom.
