Character Analysis
Laylen is a complete and total sweetheart, which is probably a weird thing to say about a vampire. As a former Keeper, he's able to keep his blood thirst under control and is still dedicated to the cause of saving the world, willingly throwing himself into harm's way to save Gemma, Alex, and Aislin.
But even though Laylen does a lot for the team, he's a very lonely guy. All of the Keepers have turned their backs on him since he became a vampire, except for Aislin (who is in love with him):
"So you know them then?"
"Yeah, but I haven't seen them in a really long time." He stared off in the distance, looking like he was lost in a painful memory. "I haven't seen any of the Keepers since…" He trailed off and looked at me. "Alex told you what I was, didn't he?" (15.80-81)
Because he's a vampire, Laylen now has to live an isolated and lonely existence. He knows why people stay away from him, of course, but that doesn't make it any easier. Perhaps this is part of why he and Gemma take to each other so readily: They both know what it's like to feel alone.
