Gemma Lucas Timeline and Summary

  • Gemma starts off the story by recounting a common nightmare that she has. In it, she's running for her life from these cloaked ice demons led by a man with a scar; they always catch her.
  • She wakes up and we learn that Gemma used to not be able to feel emotions, but in the past month she's been more emotional. She lives with her grandparents—Marco and Sophia—since her parents died when she was one. She doesn't know anything about them, though.
  • Gemma goes to school where she is totally distracted by this cute new boy in her class named Alex. Unfortunately, he seems to hate her because he just glares at her. Nice to meet you, too, dude.
  • At school, Gemma continues to work with Alex and his sister Aislin for an astronomy project. Alex hardly talks to her, though, and she wonders what his deal is.
  • One day he convinces Gemma to skip school with him and they go to a place in the woods where he says that a star once fell. A special group was sent to protect the star's power and hide it away. Cool story, bro.
  • Gemma becomes convinced that those scary demon things are stalking her in real life, but though she sees them a couple times while going about her everyday life, she doesn't tell anyone.
  • Alex comes over to work on a school project with her and she overhears him arguing with Sophia about how he's not supposed to get close to Gemma. This makes her suspicious—especially when Sophia claims that she's never met Alex before.
  • Gemma goes on an astronomy field trip at night, and when she looks into the telescope, she suddenly sees a scene with a mother talking to her little girl. What in the world?
  • The vision freaks her out and Gemma goes onto the school bus to sit by herself. Alex follows and they start talking, and then he leans down to kiss her. Just at that moment, those scary ice demons show up in real life.
  • Aislin—Alex's sister—barges in with a crystal and somehow transports them all to a house in the middle of nowhere. Gemma is confused, but Alex explains that they used magic and they are now at someone named Laylen's house near Las Vegas.
  • Alex then explains to Gemma that when her mother became pregnant with her, she hid the power of the star inside the baby. So Gemma has the star's power, and she is the only thing that can stop the world from ending according to a vision that predicts Death Walkers (those demons) will come en masse to freeze the earth.
  • Gemma also learns that she was kept in an unemotional state (and deprived of love) because the Foreseer who saw the vision also said that she wouldn't be able to close the Death Walker portal if she was emotional. So the Keepers—the people charged with protecting the star—are very worried that she's emotional now.
  • Gemma meets Laylen—who is also a Keeper, though he's a vampire, too—and they try to get in touch with Stephan (Alex and Aislin's father and the leader of the Keepers), Sophia, and Marco. No one answers, though, so Aislin says that they have to go back to look for them.
  • Aislin's transportation crystal is broken so they all head into town to buy one. First they stop at a vampire club to pick up the Sword of Immortality, though, since this blade can actually kill the Death Walkers. Then they go to the magic crystal store.
  • Gemma touches a crystal ball there and falls into a vision where she sees a man force a woman into the lake. When she returns, Alex explains to her that the lake she saw was probably the Underworld, where people are forced into an underwater prison where the water faeries feed off of their fear until they die.
  • Then they return to the house, and Laylen watches Gemma while Alex and Aislin go back to search for Sophia, Marco, and Stephan. While they're gone, Death Walkers invade the house and Gemma has to hide. When one approaches her, she stabs it in the heart and kills it.
  • Alex and Aislin return and find the scene. Alex says that he will take Gemma to a cabin somewhere while Aislin and Laylen distract the Death Walkers before joining them. They transport safely, but Aislin and Laylen don't follow.
  • When Alex and Gemma go to the grocery store to get supplies, a guy named Nicholas starts talking to her, and when Alex and Gemma return to the cabin, he's there waiting and says that he has to take Gemma with him because she's a Foreseer and had a vision.
  • Alex relents because once someone has a vision they belong to the Foreseers, but he says that she cannot stay with them because the Keepers need her.
  • Nicholas transports them to the City of Crystal, which is where the Foreseers live. They meet Dyvinius, the leader of the Foreseers, who hears Alex out and says that she can stay with the Keepers for a while if she doesn't touch a crystal ball until she's properly trained.
  • Then he tells her that she has to do one more thing before they can go: She has to fix the vision of the lake that she saw. When she originally saw it, all the faces were blurred because it wasn't a full vision. So Gemma goes back into the vision and concentrates until she sees all the faces clearly.
  • She and Alex return to the cabin, where he confesses to her that the reason she doesn't remember her mother (even though she disappeared when Gemma was four) is because they detached her soul from its emotions. And if they can't figure out a way to make her unemotional again, they might have to remove her soul altogether. Yikes.
  • After Gemma cries it out, Alex gives her a locket that her mother gave her and kisses her. She finds a picture inside and freaks out because there's the man with the scar—the same one who pushed her mother into the lake in her vision and who leads the Death Walkers to her in her dreams. She asks who that is and Alex says it's his father, Stephan.
  • Then Stephan shows up leading a bunch of Death Walkers. Gemma runs into the forest while Alex punches his father, but Stephan catches up to her, slices her in the leg, and leads her back. She is horrified to see that Alex is going along with his father now.
  • Stephan takes out a rock that is supposed to remove Gemma's soul and all her thoughts—she won't even be able to function anymore—then her eyes flutter close, and Gemma feels nothing.
