- We get a little back-story on Uncle Mumpreh. He's a good-hearted comedian who is always willing to help people, whether that's healing their wounds or giving his nephews a piece of candy.
- Vahan can't believe his funny-loving uncle would ever revolt—he knows something is wrong.
- His sister Oskina tells Vahan that all the men that were taken away with their dad are now dead. They were shot.
- Vahan's not sure what to think, so he smiles. Say what? He's not creepy—he just hopes that his dad is not really dead. Oskina tells him to be strong.
- A couple days later, Vahan and his brothers see hundreds of Armenians outside their house, walking down to the river. They are lead by gendarmes with guns, and they are being taken somewhere, but where?
- At dinner, Vahan's family discusses what to do. Vahan tells us that it's funny that they thought they were in control of their lives at the time, because they were not. His grandma tells them to zip it—they shouldn't talk about this anymore, and that's it and that's final.
- The next night, Uncle Mumpreh returns, except he's got bruises and marks all over his body. It's clear to us that he's been tortured, but Vahan doesn't really understand what that means.
- Uncle Mumpreh gives all the women in the family some poison to wear around their necks, telling them to take it if "there is any trouble." They nod.
- Vahan is super confused. What could be worse than death? Why would someone volunteer to take poison?
- Still worried and confused, Vahan goes to bed and dreams of his family being shot.
