Forgotten Fire Chapter 5 Summary

  • When Vahan wakes up the next morning, he doesn't know it's the last day of his childhood. Yikes—that's a bummer. He now knows though, that this was the last morning he saw his brothers together.
  • Seven soldiers show up at his house with guns. They question his mom about the servants, and she tells them the servants have all left—it's just them.
  • They want to know where Mumpreh went, and Vahan's mom tells them the truth: he left this morning and they're not sure where he is.
  • Of course the soldiers don't believe her, though, so they make everyone line up outside and search the house themselves.
  • Even though they find no sign of Mumpreh, they yell at Vahan's mom and then shoot his brothers Tavel and Diran right in front of him. They let Vahan and Sisak go since they are a lot younger.
  • After the soldiers are gone, Sisak and Vahan dig graves for their brothers. Everyone is tremendously shaken up about what's happened. Vahan's mom stares out at the garden where it happened; Sisak spends time by the graves; Oskina starts wearing their dad's shirts; his grandma knits; and Vahan doesn't feel like himself anymore.
  • Later, soldiers come back and make them line up in the garden again. Vahan's sure he's going to die.
  • Instead though, the soldiers take them to a place called Goryan's Inn.
