How It All Goes Down
The Initiate
- "The training room smells like effort," (2.1) Four says. If anyone tries to spritz you with Eau du Effort, don't let them. It smells like "sweat and dust and shoes." (2.1)
- Four almost lost his first fight, against a girl named Mia, because he didn't want to hit a girl.
- Tomorrow he's supposed to fight Eric, and he doesn't want to lose. He's been training non-stop.
- Amar tries to tell him that initiation is more than fighting and training; it's also about making friends.
- Four doesn't do the friend thing: "I'm used to being alone." (2.11)
- Amar invites him to play a game, which is called Dare.
- They all meet that night and play a game like Truth or Dare, except it's all Dare and no truth, and there's more drinking.
- Other people playing are Amar, Lauren ("A Dauntless girl" (2.18)) Zeke, and Shauna.
- Zeke says his fights are going well, although Shauna gave him a big bruise.
- Four can't believe that Shauna isn't bothered by being hit, because she's a girl.
- She says it doesn't matter that she has "girl parts" (2.45), she can fight just like anyone else.
- Everyone chats a bit more, then it's time for the first Dare: Amar runs into the Erudite library and moons everyone.
- Then we skip to the last daredevil, who is Four, of course. A boy dares him to get a tattoo.
- They all walk to Tori's place, and Four wants flames on his rib cage.
- He peels off his shirt (you're welcome) and Tori notices the cuts on his back.
- Four pretends they're from training.
- The next morning, Four is sore from drinking, training, and tattooing. He worries he's going to lose the fight to Eric.
- The fight starts, and things are going in Eric's favor, until Four channels his pain into rage and beats him like Edward Norton beats Jared Leto in Fight Club.
- After the fight, Shauna asks Four to help her train. Who better to teach her than the guy who just broke another guy's nose and knocked out some teeth.
- Four starts making friends, hanging out with Shauna, Zeke, Zeke's little bro Uriah, and Shauna's little sister Lynn.
- He also helps Shauna train.
- Later, Amar takes Four in for an experiment.
- He injects him with a serum that brings up a simulation.
- It's intense, too. Marcus shows up with razor blades for fingertips a la Freddy Krueger.
- They keep multiplying until Four is surrounded.
- He remembers that this is a simulation, and he makes a window with his mind and escapes.
- Back in reality, Amar says he was only in there for five minutes.
- He also wonders how Four was able to just create an exit where there was none.
- Amar thought he was the only person who could change simulations. Wrong, dude!
- Amar warns him that "the Dauntless are all about conformity" (2.261) so next time he should try to escape the simulation organically, not try and change it.
- At lunch, Shauna reveals that she won her fight. Yay!
- She kisses his cheek, and this PDA makes him uncomfortable.
- After having a conversation with Max, the Dauntless leader, Amar pulls Four away for an "evaluation." (2.281)
- Jeanine Matthews, an Erudite representative, demands it because their results were abnormal.
- Four gets left in the room alone with Jeanine while Amar gathers the equipment.
- She asks him why he goes by "Four" and not "Tobias."
- He says, "I wanted a clean slate." (2.290)
- Amar returns and puts Four into the simulation.
- This time it's a fear of heights simulation, and Tobias has to scale down a building by dropping from windowsill to windowsill.
- He falls, and he has to let himself die in the simulation instead of change it.
- This proves to Jeanine that Four's "abnormal" (2.313) test result was a "program error" (2.313)
- But she's not done. She wants to see one of Amar's simulations too. She says an initiate "express[ed] his concerns" (3.317) for their wellbeing, so she has to investigate.
- Four knows this unnamed initiate had to have been Eric.
- Over the next week, nothing bad happens… until Amar's body is found at the bottom of the Pire. He either jumped or fell.
- Four is angry that Amar was killed. He knows Eric and Jeanine had something to do with it. And he worries that they'll come for him next.
- He's still able to pass his final examination, and confront Eric, telling him "You're the reason [Amar is] dead" (2.377) and giving him a threatening shove.
- Finally, the initiation results are revealed. Four is number one. Eric is number two. Hahaha: number two.
- He heads out toward the train tracks after celebrating.
- A train goes by, and Four notices someone on the train who looks just like his mother. Gasp!
