How It All Goes Down
The Traitor
- This part begins two years after Four's initiation on Visiting Day.
- Of course his dad doesn't visit, but he meets the mom of Tris, one of his new initiates. (She looks familiar!)
- He worries that Tris's mom will recognize him, but if she does, she doesn't say anything.
- Four spends the rest of Visiting Day spying on people with the security cameras.
- He isolates the footage of Max's office on his terminal and manages to see his password.
- Four goes to Max's office and plugs the password in his computer.
- He sets up a program that will allow him to access the computer remotely, and he returns to his job.
- His boss, Gus, is not happy that Four isolated the footage and that he left his station.
- He warns him that if he keeps making mistakes, he'll have to do something about it.
- Four isn't worried. Now that the program is installed, he won't have to sneak away anymore.
- That night, someone bangs on his door. It's Zeke. An initiate named Edward was stabbed in the eye!
- Four goes to yell at Max, saying it's Eric's fault the initiates are out of control.
- Max pretty much tells him to go away.
- After visiting Edward in the infirmary, he has to administer Tris's fear simulation.
- She gets out of the simulation in only three minutes, but she still feels weak because it was so scary.
- They talk about fears and how Dauntless has changed since Four went through initiation and Eric took over. Then he helps her back to her dorm.
- At work, Four remotely logs into Max's computer and finds a mysterious file that seems to indicate an impending attack on Abnegation.
- Later, during another one of Tris's fear landscapes, she escapes the same way Four once did: by manipulating the simulation.
- He tells her she's Divergent, and she needs to find a way to hide that during the simulations.
- Then he deletes her abnormal footage.
- He sends a message to Evelyn, his mother, and meets her on a train.
- He tells her what he saw on the computer, but it's not much help because he doesn't have that much info, and she already knew about it anyway.
- She doesn't seem to have a problem with them attacking Abnegation. She doesn't like her former faction that much.
- Four is angry with her for being so bitter, and he returns home.
- One night, he hears a scream coming from the Pit. People are attacking Tris and trying to throw her over.
- Four saves her, and beats the snot out of one of her attackers.
- He carries Tris back to her room, where he realizes that even with her face all swollen and gross, "there's something striking about her" (4.334). ("What nice wounds you have.")
- The next day, Four threatens Eric for letting the initiates get out of control, even though he knows Eric won't do a thing to rein them in.
- To get his point across, he and Zeke and Shauna threaten Peter, one of Tris's attackers. They decide to go threaten Drew and Al, too.
- The next morning, they discover that Al killed himself by jumping down the Pit. Yikes.
- Four is mad that "all dead people become heroes" (4.375).
- Four goes to talk to Tris, who is upset that Al died, because "this would never have happened in Abnegation" (4.386)
- He tells her to watch her mouth because people are watching her.
- She needs to make sure to act Dauntless. They don't like people who act different. She needs to try her best to think Dauntless all the time.
- This brings them closer together, and Four almost kisses Tris, but he doesn't.
- He wants to tell her more about himself, but he doesn't know how. Instead, he decides to show her, by taking her into his fear landscape.
- They don't seem to faze her. She even faces down fear-Marcus with a bravery that Four doesn't have.
- After the simulation, he kisses her on the cheek.
- He takes her to the rocks near the water and they talk about each other, like how Four's aptitude test was Abnegation, but he chose Dauntless anyway.
- Four also tells Tris "I like how you look," (4.571) which is his version of a compliment.
- Then they make out. Wahoo!
- He walks her back to her dorm, and then heads to the Abnegation sector to talk to his dear ol' dad.
- Marcus is not happy to see his son.
- When Four tells him that Max and Jeanine are planning an attack, Marcus doesn't believe him.
- He tells him he's not welcome here, then when Four goes to leave says, "Don't walk away from me." (4.597) Argh!
- This time, Four is strong enough to pull away.
- He returns to Dauntless and realizes that he still has to protect Abnegation because that is where Tris and her family are from. If she believes in them, he will believe in them too.
