- We enter Part II: Madame C.V. D.u.T. (the name of the old lady we have already met).
- Zero finds that Madame D. was found dead. Gustave says that he, and therefore Zero, must go to her immediately.
- In the train on the way to Lutz, where Madame D. lived, Gustave tells Zero about her— her kids will be overjoyed at the awful news and that she was, by his account, "dynamite in the sack."
- Suddenly, the train is stopped and military men board it and ask for papers. Zero's papers aren't good and when Gustave tries to interrupt, things start to get a little ugly.
- Then Commander Henckels shows up. He orders his men to stop immediately—his family visited the Budapest and Gustave, he says, was very kind to a lonely little boy.
- After the incident Gustave tries explaining that there is some decency left in world, but then gives up.
