• Noah and Jude. Jude and Noah. They are twins, and they're inseparable.
• Except that, at around age 14, their interests seem to diverge. Noah's art crazy and Jude's boy crazy. (Meanwhile, secretly, Jude's art crazy, and Noah's boy crazy. Go figure.)
• Noah and his sister are increasingly competitive. They do nasty things to one another out of spite.
• Noah's mom wants him to go to art school, and he's super excited about it. He basks in his mother's praise of his work.
• He also sabotages Jude's artistic efforts, including by hiding a note that Jude left inviting her mom to see her sand sculptures.
• Noah befriends a neighbor, Brian. He quickly falls in love with him, but feels unsure about Brian's interest level (not least because of the whole being-afraid-to-come-out thing).
• Turns out Brian's interested. He and Noah make out, but Brian wants to keep it secret. Soon after that (with a boost from Noah's mom walking in on them in a, um, compromising position), Brian wants to cut things off altogether.
• Noah finds out that his mother is having an affair with Guillermo Garcia. Running home, he sees Brian with a girl and announces that Brian's gay. D'oh.
• He confronts his mom about her affair. They fight bitterly (he's pretty bitter, at least) before she drives off. And dies.
• Noah doesn't get into art school. (Because Jude trashed his application. But he doesn't know that.) He swears off art entirely and tries to turn himself into a new (boring) person.
• He finds out that Jude is working with Guillermo. This is bad news. He thinks he's responsible for their mom's death, and he doesn't want Jude to find out.
• Depressed, Noah gets drunk with friends and almost jumps off a cliff. Oscar tackles him at the last minute.
• Noah confronts Jude and Guillermo in G's studio. He says he blames Guillermo for his mom's death, even though he doesn't really believe it.
• He reconciles with Jude, even though she confesses the application thing. He's not mad.
• Noah shows Jude a spray paint mural that he's been working on. It gets him into art school, though by then he's not sure he wants to go.
• He reconciles with Brian. They're together. In public.
