Come on, this movie is called Independence Day—you know there has to be certain amount of rah-rah-America stuff.
Sure, technically the entire world is involved in this battle against the aliens, but aside from some brief references to/shots of reactions in other countries, this film is all about how the U.S. responds to this new threat on the anniversary of their liberation from Britain.
Spoiler: The United States proves itself as courageous and exceptional as ever, taking the lead in the successful worldwide mission to shake off the would-be invaders.
Questions about Patriotism
- How would the movie have been different if there had been more of a focus on the rest of the world and their reactions to the crisis? Would it have been better? Worse?
- Is the level of patriotism fun or cheesy/heavy handed? Or both?
- What kind of image do you get of America from the film? In terms of its place in the world? In terms of its population?
Chew on This
Let's be real—this movie is about how Americans are basically the bravest, most fearless people ever. They lead the charge against the aliens and get the job done.
The film suggests that America's strength comes from its diversity, with people from very different walks of life and parts of the country uniting to take a stand against the aliens.
