Character Analysis
As Freud interprets his Dream of the Botanical Monograph (5.2.7), he recalls a recent conversation with a colleague and his wife, Herr and Frau Gärtner (5.2.11).
Freud doesn't tell us much about these folks, but their real-life personalities aren't really important, anyway. What's important for Freud's dream is the linguistic association between the name "Gärtner" and its association with "gardening." ("Gärtner" means "gardener" in German.) Like many other elements in the Dream of the Botanical Monograph, the Gärtners participate in the "overdetermination" of the theme of "plants" and "botany."
