Antagonist
Character Role Analysis
Bertrand Welch
No doubt about this, either. We were tempted to go with "The World in General," but we'll stick with Bertrand. He stands in the way of everything Jim's trying to achieve: authenticity, self-respect, and a decent shot at a normal relationship. You gotta love the fistfight that's the climax of this conflict. It's over in about two seconds, but it's a symbolic win for our hero.
Behind Bertrand Welch is a team of other lesser antagonists who seem dedicated to foiling every plan Jim tries to make. These include the shrill and unpleasant Mrs. Welch and Evan Johns, both of whom have it out for our Jim at every turn.
