Character Role Analysis
Mr. Gore-Urquhart
If there's anyone truly on Jim's side in this book, it's rich Uncle Gore-Urquhart. We don't really understand this until the end of the book, but we get a pretty good feeling about it when Gore-Urquhart orders full pints at the university Summer Ball, thus making Jim feel like life is worth living for a few more hours.
Gore-Urquhart shares Jim's dislike of phony, pretentious people. And it's this bond that eventually leads Gore-Urquhart to give Jim a job instead of Bertrand Welch. And at the end of the book, we've got what looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
