- Abyssinia and Patience figure out how to keep themselves fed without help from the county by eating wild greens and food they've canned in the past. The landlord agrees to let them stay on when Patience promises to make up for the rent once the cotton harvest comes back around.
- Brother Jacobs is set to be released from prison, and Patience turns to God for help.
- The town starts saying all Patience does is pray, but then Patience gets Strong's old shotgun out and polishes it up, leaving it in the front window for all to see.
- Brother Jacobs gets wind of Patience's conviction and doesn't come anywhere near Ponca City when he's released.
