Saturday Evening
September 10, 1966
- Abby and some other women are mending their cotton sacks as Mother Barker prepares a birthday feast in Abby's honor. There's cobbler and cake and beans and crackling bread.
- As the women mend and Mother Barker cooks, they discuss someone named Ruby. She's super pregnant and it seems her husband's nowhere to be found, prompting a bit of a conversation about what truly constitutes a husband (spoiler alert: it isn't a marriage certificate).
- Mother Barker is more concerned about Ruby and her baby, though. Something isn't right, and Mother Barker's sure of this fact.
