Wednesday Afternoon
February 3, 1971
- Abby brings Lily Norene's daughters to her house, a.k.a. the old Barker house, to care for them while their grandparents' house is still be worked on.
- She watches the girls playing and building a snowman, then goes outside to join them, giving them pennies for buttons and showing them how to make perfect and totally killer snowballs.
- And then the women of Ponca City come, bearing food and ready to sew new bedspreads for Lily's daughters.
- The women sit around sewing and talking, and the conversation turns to the power of women (be sure to swing by the "Themes" section for more on this).
- As Abby finishes the birds she's sewing on a quilt, she calls for silence, saying to the women, "You women of women, you women of mercy, balancing crystals of water on your wings, rise from deep ashes, rise from old ashes, rise etched and marked from scarifications, rise and fly."
- And then, in her soul, Abby begins to rise.
