Art Buchwald once accused Dr. Seuss of never having written a political book. He then received the gift of Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! with Marvin's name scratched out on every page and replaced with Richard Nixon. We do find the accusation pretty strange, though, because Seuss had an entire career in political cartoons during WWII. And some of them go really political. Sure, the cartoons weren't printed in book form then, but come on, do we really need to be that technical, Art? (Source.)

Richard M. Nixon was the first politician to get the Marvin K. Mooney treatment, but he certainly wasn't the last. In America, Hillary Clinton received a bit of Marvin K. when she refused to withdraw from the 2008 Democratic primaries against soon-to-be President Obama. Overseas, Hosni Mubarak got Marvin K.'ed when he wouldn't step down from being President of Egypt. Even British Prime Minister Gordon Brown had his name thrown into the mix. It's like watching a slasher flick; you're just sitting there wondering, who'll be next?

At least Marvin K. Mooney is the only Seuss character with a political message attached to him. Oh wait. We've just been informed that's not strictly true. In fact, it's downright false. Seuss's other politically charged children's stories include The Lorax, The Butter Battle Book, Yertle the Turtle, Horton Hears a Who, and The Sneetches. Suddenly our bookshelves feel a little less innocent (but a lot more fun).

Dr. Seuss isn't really a doctor at all. Everybody knows this fact, but fewer people know he did study for his PhD in English—he just never finished the program. Of course, this is all balanced by the fact that people with doctoral degrees now study his works. (Source.)
