• At the beginning, we meet Max, the leader of a flock of human-avian hybrid children who live in a house together.
• When Erasers, a group of human-wolf hybrids from this nefarious place called the School swoop down and kidnap the youngest flock member (Angel), Max decides to take a couple of her flock members on a rescue mission.
• As they're flying toward the School, Max sees a girl being bullied by some boys and decides to swoop down and help. In the process, she ends up getting shot in the shoulder and damages her wing.
• She approaches the girl and her mother—Ella and Dr. Martinez, respectively—who offer to let her stay with them while she recovers. While at their house, Max revels in the care that she gets and loves feeling like she's a part of a "real" family.
• Eventually, Max leaves and meets up with the rest of her flock. She, Nudge, and Fang get captured by Erasers who take them back to the School—where they're all reunited with Angel in the worst possible way (in dog crates).
• Jeb appears and Max tells him that she hates him, even when he tries to convince her that he's not a bad guy for being a part of the School, and that her destiny in life is to save the world.
• Max is saved along with the rest of the flock when Iggy and the Gasman lead a bunch of giant hawks to attack the School.
• She also learns from Angel that there's a place in New York City called the Institute where all of their files are stored… and that they have biological parents. Max makes the executive decision that they're all going to New York City to hunt down this information.
• Along the way, Max starts having these crazy brain spasms, which makes her worry that she's about to "expire," since hybrids have a shorter life span than ordinary human beings. She also starts to hear this strange voice talking to her in her head.
• The flock members are attacked by Erasers several times and even blow their cover when they take flight in a restaurant (which leads to a front page news story), but they eventually find the Institute thanks to the voice in Max's head.
• She leads them all into the Institute and starts printing off pages of their files. They also find a bunch of other hybrids kept in cages, and Max tells the flock members to start opening cages and releasing the hybrids.
• They start to escape but are ambushed by Erasers. In order to help the other hybrids escape, Max distracts Ari—Jeb's son, who is now an Eraser—and accidentally kills him in the process.
• As she runs away with all of the other flock members and hybrids, Max hears Jeb yelling at her that she just killed her own brother. What does that mean?
• After the flock gets away, they read the files and find information on all of their families… except for Max. She tells them that they can go to Washington D.C. next, since that's where most of their biological parents are located.
