The doctor's son is the one to cure the gestalt of its sickness by leading it to adopt an ethic by which it can mature. That's why Hip is the hero of this novel. Hip advances from someone who just wanted to be popular to someone who builds an ethical philosophy—and delivers the goods by empathizing with the antagonist, Gerry, enough to persuade him to accept it.
