Character Analysis
Life (yep, that's his name!) is Tim and Sam's dad, and he's hitched to Susannah Meeker. This means that most of the time, we're thinking about him as "Father."
And let's get real about Mr. M: he is one opinionated dude.
For one thing, Mr. Meeker is a Tory. He's loyal to England and thinks that everyone should stop their whining and obey the king. Case in point: when Sam says he's joining up with the Continental Army to fight against England, here's what Mr. Meeker has to say:
"I will not have treason in my house. We are Englishmen, we are subjects of the King, this rebellion is the talk of madmen." (1.152)
Mr. Meeker doesn't leave much wiggle room in these statements. To him there's only one choice: support the king, and that's that.
In fact, the only thing Mr. M hates more than treason is war. And he really hates this Revolutionary War. He thinks there are going to be a lot of deaths, and it turns out he's right.
