Protagonist
Character Role Analysis
Margaret Hale
When problems arise with the Hale family, Margaret is the one who has to deal with them. She's a major fixer. She's also the person who we get the most access to throughout this novel: as we travel with Margaret from the South to the North, we also follow her on her mental journey from innocence to knowledge.
Before she travels, she knows nothing about the world of factories and manufacturing. And it's not until she gets past her prejudices against manufacturers and tradesmen that she's finally be able to practice the compassion that she preaches so much. Luckily for us, we get a front-row seat throughout her transformation.
