Merlyn

Merlyn is Dumbledore to Wart's Harry Potter. Hired on as tutor to Wart and Kay, the old and befuddled wizard is more interested in Wart's education, and focuses the lion's share of his time and attention (not to mention his magic) on the younger boy. We don't know why this is until the very end of Book 1.

Then we learn that it was Merlyn's job to make sure Wart was raised right, so he would be worthy to become King of England. And it's thanks to Merlyn's capable tutelage that the boy ends up being successful.
