The Boarding House for Gentlemen
- Lily takes the train out to Toongabbie and travels along icy streets to Lonnie's boarding house. On the way, she thinks about her usual topics: her mom, her weirdo family, and of course, Daniel Steadman.
- She wonders if Daniel knows anything about how strange her family is and if that's the reason he seems totally uninterested in her.
- When she gets to the boarding house, Lonnie's landlady tells her that he's gone. This initially causes Lily to panic—after all, Lonnie does have a history of moving onto the next thing without warning.
- She feels relieved when the landlady says that he's actually at an early class. This gives Lily hope; the Lonnie she knew never took early classes.
- Not wanting to wait around for him, Lily asks for permission to leave a note in Lonnie's room, which is strewn with dirty clothes and pizza boxes. She writes that Nan really wants him at the party and that it's time he and Pop buried the hatchet (or maybe the ax).
- When she puts it on his pillow, she notices a piece of paper with the name "Clara" written on it over and over again. She feels sad that Lonnie seems to have a girlfriend, and wishes someone—maybe Daniel—would love her like that.
