Character Analysis
Mr. Lewis is an American senator, a seasoned diplomat who views Lord Darlington's attempts at diplomacy as "amateurish." He scoffs at Darlington's idealism and seems more practical and realistic.
At Darlington's 1923 conference, Mr. Lewis is depicted as a shifty character who seems out to hijack the proceedings by creating animosity between Monsieur Dupont and his English hosts. Yet the events of World War II seem to vindicate Mr. Lewis's suspicions about Darlington's amateur idealism.
