Character Analysis
Mr. Cardinal is Lord Darlington's godson, the son of his friend Sir Cardinal. A regular guest at the hall, he gets to know Stevens and even goes so far as to call him a "friend." Like Mr. Lewis, he is perceptive when it comes to international affairs and confronts Stevens with the ramifications of Darlington's negotiations with the Germans. And—good for him!—Mr. Cardinal actively tries to prevent Darlington from becoming bamboozled by the Nazis.
