Abhorsen (Sabriel's Father), Mogget

Sabriel's guide and mentor for her childhood was her father, but once he goes missing at the start of the book, she's left without a guide—until she reaches her father's house in the Old Kingdom, that is.

At this point, Mogget steps into the role of Sabriel's guide, although he's a much more antagonistic guide than her father. Instead of genuinely caring for Sabriel, as guides often do, Mogget is bound to serve those in Sabriel's position, prompting him to be cryptic at times and resentful about his service. We get the feeling that it's really not Mogget's favorite thing to babysit a brand new Abhorsen, but he does the job, and it's thanks to Mogget that Sabriel navigates the Old Kingdom and ultimately defeats Kerrigor.
