- When dinner is over, it's on to business. Somerset and Mills hash out the details of the Gould/greed case.
- Mills believes the killer got in on Friday and was able to torture Gould all weekend.
- Gould had to cut off part of himself with a knife and weigh it on a scale.
- There was a note: "One pound of flesh; no more, no less. No cartilage, no bone, but only flesh."
- Somerset recognizes it as The Merchant of Venice. Mills: "Didn't see it."
- Gould cut off part of a love handle and bled to death.
- Somerset believes the killer is preaching somehow.
- Mills hands Somerset the photo of Gould's wife, with her bloody eyeglasses, and Somerset wonders if it isn't something she has seen, but something she's supposed to see.
- When Tracy gets up, both men are gone.
- They go to the safe house to visit Mrs. Gould.
- She looks at the crime scene photos and cries, but Mills wants her to see if there's anything strange or out of place.
- She does. The painting on the wall is upside down.
- They go to the law office and take down the painting. Nothing is on the wall behind it.
- Somerset slits open the brown paper backing. Nothing.
- Somerset brushes some magic fingerprint dust on the wall and finds a message.
- The print lab arrives and does its work, revealing the message—"help me." They are not the victim's prints.
- The prints are run through the computer. No match.
- In the hall, Somerset says he noticed that Mills told Mrs. Gould he really wants to catch the bad guy. Somerset says he doesn't feel that way anymore. He just feels like he's "picking up the pieces."
- Mills isn't as cynical. "I assure you. We're getting somewhere."
