Character Analysis
South-Going Zax
The South-Bound Zax is a stubborn cuss of a creature, isn't he? A graduate of South-Going School, the South-Going Zax only makes tracks in a southbound direction. When confronted with an obstacle—say, a North-Going Zax perhaps—he will not alter course. He says it himself:
"Never budge! That's my rule. Never budge in the least! / Not an inch to the west! Not an inch to the east! / I'll stay here, not budging! I can and I will." (Zax.24-26)
You've got to give him props for that moxie. Unfortunately, this prideful mantra means he ultimately doesn't get anywhere in the story, and he never budges his way into standing still forever. The lesson for young Zax—ahem, children—should be perfectly clear: north, south, east, west, and all the directions in between are perfectly fine. And don't be afraid to go off course.
North-Going Zax
This guy is just like the South-Going Zax, only substitute the word "North" for "South." Although not specifically mentioned, we believe it is safe to say he attended North-Going School and graduated summa cum laude.
