Clara Wintermute

Clara Wintermute is just a little girl—and one who turns into a motionless puppet—but she's still a formidable protagonist. The story revolves around her and her brush with the evil Grisini, who turns Clara into a puppet so he can hold her for ransom while her parents are beside themselves with worry and grief.

Clara has dealt with a lot of tough things in her life, like the deaths of her four siblings, but she doesn't let tragedy knock her down. Instead, she fights against all of the terrible things that happen to her, and she even manages to overcome Grisini's spell and destroy the phoenix-stone at the very end of the book. She does what even the powerful magicians could not do. You go, girl.
