Surrender Chapter 13 Summary

Gabriel

  • It was Evangeline's name that first attracted Gabriel to her—it sounds holy and he liked that.
  • As he thinks about her, he sees blood on his hands, but convinces himself to look more alive.
  • Growing up in a small town, they'd known of each other forever. They'd been in the same grade at school even, and got used to being around each other.
  • She was popular, though, so Gabriel never talked to her.
  • One day in class, he was staring at Evangeline, thinking about how pretty her name—and the girl herself—were, when everything changed.
  • Back in the present, Gabriel wheezes and has trouble breathing. He thinks about how love only brings trouble.
  • Finnigan told Gabriel he should talk to Evangeline. She might like him back; he just had to give it a shot.
  • In class, Gabriel is staring at Evangeline when his teacher calls on him. He wasn't paying attention, on account of crushing on Evangeline, so when his teacher, Mr. Volton asks him what he's doing, Gabriel replies "thinking."
  • Wanting to zing a student who is disrupting his class by slacking, Mr. Volton proclaims—in front of the entire class—that he saw Gabriel staring at Evangeline and he should keep such thoughts in the bedroom. Wink, wink.
  • Everyone chuckles, and Gabriel is mortified.
  • One Saturday at home, Evangeline drops by. She tells him that he doesn't need to hide, and that she'd like to be friends.
  • He tells her to shut her eyes, and hands her the cutest little duckling. She thinks it's beautiful and they start chatting.
  • Evangeline explains that Mr. Volton is an idiot, so not to worry. Besides, he's all down in the dumps now that his beloved cat is missing.
  • She thinks that's karma, but Gabriel knows better.
  • In his room, Gabriel opens his eyes and hears something, so he calls for Sarah; he hopes Evangeline is coming to visit him.
  • He asks Sarah what's going on, and she lies and tells him nothing.
  • Outside, though, he sees a fire. He knows Finnigan is close by.
