Surrender Chapter 19 Summary

Gabriel

  • After remembering the past all day, Gabriel is exhausted and doesn't want to remember any more.
  • Finnigan is watching Gabriel closely because his life depends on whether Gabriel lives or dies.
  • Gabriel admits he's been waiting for Evangeline to come visit him all these years, but he knows she won't show up.
  • Finnigan says he doesn't want to hear what happened between them that day after Gabriel left the forest.
  • Gabriel remembers being disheveled and upset after leaving Surrender with Finnigan.
  • He goes straight to Evangeline's house, but when he gets there, she has company—or her parents do, anyway.
  • Gabriel asks to see her and explains it's important. He tells her that she has to leave town—now—or else he'll come for her.
  • She's understandably confused, and asks him what he's talking about. He says he can't explain it, but she better pack up and leave.
  • He's worried what Finnigan might do to her if she doesn't, but he can't tell her that.
  • She says she doesn't believe him, and if he can't even explain it to her, then why should she leave?
  • Suddenly, his mom comes in the room. She's shocked to see her there, and she tells him to get outside this instant.
  • He obeys and walks home with her. She's humiliated because she was the only person in town who wasn't invited to the party at Evangeline's parents' house.
  • She tells Gabriel that she knows he's upset about his dog, but he needs to be an adult about it; she can't handle all of this stress.
  • As they come back to the house, she chides him some more for his selfishness. Then his dad chimes in, telling his son to go get the belt (for a whipping).
  • Gabriel is sick of putting up with them. As he walks out to the garage to get the belt, he sees the hatchet and grabs that instead.
  • He takes a swing at his mom first, sticking the blade into her skull. Then he hits his dad with it, too. Just like that, there's blood everywhere, and both of his parents are dead.
  • Gabriel notices how quiet it is and washes the blood off his hands before grabbing a mop and cleaning up the rest of the blood.
  • Then he buries the bodies in a hole he digs.
  • He goes back to the house and drifts off and on for a while.
  • The next day, Constable McIllwraith bangs on the door and wakes him up; he asks if Gabriel is okay after everything that happened yesterday at Evangeline's place.
  • He notices Gabriel is off and says he's going to take him somewhere to rest.
  • Gabriel remembers this all was years ago, and now he is ill.
