- Morris and Ida clear the light snow that has fallen and bring in the rolls and milk. A bottle is missing. So are three rolls. Morris tells his wife they're all there so as not to upset her more.
- Items are missing on the third day as well, and Morris considers calling the police.
- Before he involves the police and brings possible harm to a poor person, Morris decides to spy on the delivery and catch the thief in the act.
- No luck.
- Ida doesn't like him standing by the cold window.
- Morris tries to guess at who the thief might be. He recalls earlier thefts from his store by a neighborhood boy.
- He checks with the boy's mother. It doesn't seem to be him.
- After calling him a fool for not telling her earlier, Ida calls the police.
- Mr. Minogue, a detective with a troublesome son named Ward, comes to investigate. He says he'll have a cop watch the store in the mornings.
- Before leaving, the detective asks Morris if he's seen his son.
- Morris goes down to the cellar and finds Frank Alpine asleep. The Italian man admits to stealing from Morris out of hunger.
- Morris brings him up for food and drink.
- Ida doesn't want him there.
- After an argument, Morris lets Frank spend the night on the couch.
- Ida dreams that Frank steals all of their stock during the night.
- In the morning, Morris finds Frank still asleep on the couch.
- He goes to bring in the milk, but the exertion reopens his head wound. He passes out.
- Frank carries him inside, calls an ambulance, and runs to tell Helen and Ida what happened.
- Frank returns to Morris, removes his apron and puts it on himself.
- Well, now. Someone doesn't waste an opportunity.
