The Assistant Chapter 3, Section 3 Summary

  • Ida remains suspicious of Frank, but she's also pleased at the improved business.
  • Signs suggest that the better sales are due to Frank. Business elsewhere apparently hasn't picked up. And Frank is willing to use selling tactics that Morris won't use. Would you like fries with that?
  • Ida is likewise pleased that Frank has acted like a gentleman on those few occasions she's seen him speak to Helen. He's pleasant, but brief.
  • She talks to Morris and they decide to give him a raise.
  • Frank feels guilty because he's actually stealing some of the extra money that's come into the store, justifying the theft on the grounds that he's responsible for the increased income anyway.
  • He keeps pocketing the quarters.
