- Seeing an opening, Karp explains to Morris that his improved business didn't have to do with Frank Alpine, but the half-day hours of Schmitz's store on account of the owner's sickness.
- He then informs Morris that the other grocery will be bought by two young Norwegians.
- Karp realizes too late that he's not crushed Frank but rather Morris, who knows his business is now finished.
- Morris believes Frank has deceived him, not telling him about the misfortune of Schmitz.
- He curses Karp for bringing him this bad news just as Karp is trying to segue into proposing an arrangement for their children. So much for that plan.
