Protagonist
Character Role Analysis
Frank Alpine
You could make an argument that Morris Bober is the protagonist, but we're going with the titular character, Frank Alpine. He makes the most drastic and dramatic changes throughout the course of the story, changing in mind, body, and heart. Frank develops from a guilt-ridden, petty criminal to a business manager trying desperately to make amends for his mistakes. He also becomes a Jew, circumcision included. Ouch. He rises to self-sacrificial heights and falls to his passions and fears in among the most despicable ways possible. You love him and hate him, just like Mr. Bean.
