Although Janet, Jeannine, and Jael are all integral to the novel, it's possible to read each of them as a facet of Joanna herself: Joanna the character, Joanna the omniscient narrator, and Joanna the "spirit of the author." She is the titular "female man," after all, so it makes sense to say that the novel is all about her.
