The Prince and the Pauper Chapter 28 Summary

The Sacrifice

  • It's time for Miles's trial.
  • Miles has been sentenced to two hours in the pillory.
  • Edward is raving mad: how dare they treat his best friend like this?
  • When he sees the first egg that hits Hendon's face, Edward gets even angrier. And you know what that means: Edward gets into trouble. Soon the crowd wants to whip him for being so rowdy, but Miles takes his lashes in order to save Edward.
  • Edward is so touched by Miles's heroic move that he makes him an earl. Of course, Miles doesn't think it's real, but he appreciates the gesture, anyway.
  • The crowd is awed by how nobly Miles takes the lashes, without making a single sound. That, in addition to his heroic nature, makes them decide to stop abusing him and be silent.
  • When a guy who is late to the party starts trying to throw a dead cat at Miles, the crowd beats him up instead.
