Grumby

This one's kind of interesting, because while everybody else in the novel is busy fighting Yankees, Bayard is interested in killing his Granny's killer, a Southerner. Grumby is kind of like all the bad characteristics that a person could have, rolled up into an ugly little ball. He's the most hateable guy in the book—even with Ab Snopes giving 'im a run for his money.
