Granny

One of the reasons Granny's death is so hard on Bayard is that, more than just being his grandmother, she's the one who brought him up and taught him how to live. She takes the place of her daughter, Bayard's mother, who died in childbirth, and dedicates her life to bringing up her grandson. Sometimes she's strict, like when she teaches him not to swear by washing out his mouth with soap, but she's always looking out for him. As her general rule of thumb, it's sometimes okay to bend the rules, as long as you pray for forgiveness afterward.
